"The Greatest Thing I ever did "

For so many years, I recall being like so many; I experienced the suffering of having the need to make my mark in this world. A mark that would remain for everyone to see that did not know me personally. Life for me would not be considered complete until I had accomplished something on my own that was beyond an ordinary act; even something that would be recorded for all ages, for all to see, and share in the excitement of such a great act.
Before the fact being explained by all those possibilities of what I could possibly do that could be considered great acts; while, after the fact being my proud boasts as illustrated by of all those things that I had accomplished.
Before the fact, what could it be? What could that one great, unforgettable act be? Maybe, That many said that I was a friend of many and an enemy of none; or that I had an education followed up with a list of degrees being beyond my age; or to be considered a successful person who accomplished his goals he had set for himself; or to be a person that could always make people smile, or cause the sad to become happy; To be able to run a big business; to own and live in the largest mansion; to be the president of United States; To be a doctor and save lives and reduce the suffering in this world which is experienced by man and beast; or to win the Pulitzer or Nobel prize.
After the fact, it was that I went here and there, everywhere, all around the world and I experienced so many things that many only dream about; I lived on the edge and I was even considered a dare devil by many; I even fought city hall and won; I climbed the highest mountain; I swam the deepest sea; I walked the longest mile; I even won the biggest battle; I didn't even take advantage of a single person; I never hurt any one or raised my voice and spoke a cross word to any one.
But I realized that a change needed to be made in my attitude, a change in my way of thinking, even a change in my sense of priorities; and all of these things could be done before as well as after the fact in a manner of speaking, should the change come about. I could dream and dream, of all the things that I could do or boast of having accomplished.
But all things considered, all that which I could do or that which I have done on my own is truly vanity, good for nothing. What really counts is what Jesus was allowed to do through me. All of my great acts put together, all of my acts of righteousness are nothing, not even enough to save me. That which should be regarded as a great act is in actuality a miracle.
The truth is that I must decrease that He might increase. To live is Christ and to die is gain. You see: The greatest thing that I ever did, ( was actually something that I did not do of my own power, I relinquished my own power for One greater than all ) I met and came to know Jesus Christ The Lord of all lords, King of all kings.
